Pause and slowly pray this prayer as you enter into the presence of God and read his word.
Jesus, today, I want to see you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly. Show yourself to me. Help me. Amen.
Slowly read through the passage below, pausing to see Jesus and interact with him in prayer through the Scripture. Then answer the following questions as an invitation to walk more nearly with Jesus today.
How do you see Jesus in this passage?
What do you love about Jesus today?
What is one thing you can do today to follow Jesus more nearly?
43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”
44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.
19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
Jesus, today I receive your invitation to follow you wherever you lead. Show me now what I need to leave (pause to invite Jesus to reveal anything you are holding onto – emotions, possessions, relationships – that hinder you from following him). Give me courage to follow you today as I . . . (share with Jesus your upcoming activities). Jesus, you are worthy of my thoughts, my words, my actions and my affections. I love you. Amen.
