December 2022 Newsletter

DEAR MENLO CHURCH,

In these winter months, each morning I wake up to a living parable. Just over our backyard fence our neighbors have a robust persimmon tree. With leaves gone, the bright orange fruit hanging off the tree looks like extravagant Christmas ornaments. The drama comes as multiple squirrels and all kinds of birds come to feast on the ripe fruit. They almost seem to smile as they enjoy this delicious gift.

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? - Matthew 5:26

When we recognize that everything we have comes as a gift we see the world differently. We can slow down. We can let go. We can trust. We are grateful. When we comprehend what God has endured on our behalf we know our value. It is grace upon grace. It is the best gift of all.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. - Isaiah 9:6

The gift of Jesus allows us to share in this Holy work. Shaped by grace, we offer compassion and love to the people in our lives. With gratitude in our hearts we make time for others, share our resources, and extend blessings to people in need. Redeemed vision allows us to see people differently and not judge them based on earthly criteria. Our hope for transformed hearts and a transformed world rests on the gift of a child born in Bethlehem.

This gift is meant to be shared. It is truly good news. So make sure the people around you know about it—invite them to celebrate with you at one of our Christmas services. A simple invitation could literally change a life.

May you know, in the deepest way, that God gave his one and only Son for you.

Merry Christmas!
