Series Resources

sermon-based study guide

This guide is designed to guide a group discussion around the weekend sermon. You can also use this as an individual, but we highly recommend finding a friend and inviting them to discuss with you. Menlo Church has Life Groups meeting in-person and online using these guides. We’d love to help you find a group.
What you will find in this guide: A discussion guide for groups and individuals. If you are using this as an individual be sure to engage with each question in a journal or simply in your mind as you prayerfully consider what you heard in the sermon and seek to discover what God is inviting you to know and do.

CONNECT

What’s a habit or mindset you’ve had since childhood that has stuck with you? Is it something positive or something you’ve had to work on changing?

ENGAGE

Read Romans 8:5-8 aloud as a group and discuss:

  • In this passage, how does Paul describe the difference between living according to the flesh and living according to the Spirit?
  • In your own words, what does it mean to "set your minds on the things of the flesh" or "the things of the Spirit?" v5
  • What are the consequences of having a mindset governed by the flesh versus a mindset governed by the Spirit?

APPLY

  • Our mindsets play a crucial role in shaping our spiritual lives, discuss the concept of neuropathways and how our habits create mental maps.
  • How can we identify areas in our lives where our fleshly mindsets might be hindering our spiritual growth?
  • Refer to Philippians 4:8 and discuss what it means to "fuel your mind" with positive and uplifting things.
  • What practical steps can you take this week to set your mind on the things of the Spirit? How can you ensure these steps become a regular part of your life?

PRAYER

  • Invite each group member to share one area where they feel challenged to change their mindset from the flesh to the Spirit.
  • After sharing, spend a few moments in silent prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to guide and empower each person in these areas.
  • Conclude with a group prayer, asking God to help everyone set their minds on the things of the Spirit, bringing life and peace into their daily lives.
