Series Resources

sermon-based study guide

This guide is designed to guide a group discussion around the weekend sermon. You can also use this as an individual, but we highly recommend finding a friend and inviting them to discuss with you. Menlo Church has Life Groups meeting in-person and online using these guides. We’d love to help you find a group.
What you will find in this guide: A discussion guide for groups and individuals. If you are using this as an individual be sure to engage with each question in a journal or simply in your mind as you prayerfully consider what you heard in the sermon and seek to discover what God is inviting you to know and do.

CONNECT

Share a time you felt “guilty by association.” How did it feel?

ENGAGE

Read Romans 8:1-4 and discuss:

  • In his opening sentence, Paul says, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” What does this verse tell us about our relationship with God if we are followers of Christ? (8:1)
  • What is the difference between the “law of sin and death” and the “law of the Spirit of life”? (8:2)
  • According to Paul, what is the purpose of Jesus fulfilling the law for us? (8:4)

APPLY

  • How does the concept of "innocent by association" change how you think about your relationship with God?
  • How does the truth of “no condemnation” change the way you approach your relationship with God?
  • Are there areas in your life where you are still struggling with feelings of guilt or shame? How can this passage help you move forward?

PRAYER

Pray together as a group for a renewed love for God’s Scriptures and a deeper understanding of the Gospel. Ask God for the courage to take your pursuit of Jesus into new areas of your life.
