Series Resources
sermon-based study guide
This guide is designed to guide a group discussion around the weekend sermon. You can also use this as an individual, but we highly recommend finding a friend and inviting them to discuss with you. Menlo Church has Life Groups meeting in-person and online using these guides. We’d love to help you find a group.
What you will find in this guide: A discussion guide for groups and individuals. If you are using this as an individual be sure to engage with each question in a journal or simply in your mind as you prayerfully consider what you heard in the sermon and seek to discover what God is inviting you to know and do.

CONNECT
Share a brief story about a family heirloom or tradition. Or ask, “When you think about what you have inherited from your family, what comes to mind?”
ENGAGE
Read Romans 8:12-17 as a group and discuss:
- What does Paul mean when he says we have an "obligation"? How does this relate to the gift of the Spirit?
- What does it mean to live according to the Spirit? How can we practically discern the voice of the Spirit in our lives?
- How does our identity as children of God impact our daily lives and decisions?
APPLY
- How does understanding your identity as a child of God impact your relationship with others? (Consider how this truth influences your interactions with family, friends, and even enemies. How does it shape your attitudes toward forgiveness, compassion, and love?)
- How does the promise of the Holy Spirit's guidance and comfort equip you to face challenges and trials with confidence and hope?
PRAYER
- Take a few moments to reflect on your identity as a child of God.
- Share one way you will seek to live into your identity this week.
- Pray for each other, asking for strength, courage, and wisdom to follow the Spirit.
