sermon-based study guide

This guide is designed to guide a group discussion around the weekend sermon. You can also use this as an individual, but we highly recommend finding a friend and inviting them to discuss with you. Menlo Church has Life Groups meeting in-person and online using these guides. We’d love to help you find a group.
What you will find in this guide: A discussion guide for groups and individuals. If you are using this as an individual be sure to engage with each question in a journal or simply in your mind as you prayerfully consider what you heard in the sermon and seek to discover what God is inviting you to know and do.

Connect

  • Can you think of a time when you were having a meal or event and something or someone changed the plan? Share the story and how you responded to the disruption of the plan.

Engage

Read Matthew 26:6-13

  • What do you notice in this passage?
  • What stands out to you about Jesus?
  • What was poured on Jesus and what is it foreshadowing?

Apply

  • What does it mean for God to get our best rather than what's left? How does this principle challenge our daily priorities and actions?
  • Reflect on the idea that we are stewards, not owners, of everything in our lives. How does this perspective impact the way we handle our possessions, time, relationships, and careers?
  • Phil says, “You are on a mission wherever you live, work, learn, and play”. How do you live out this idea of being on mission with Jesus in your life?

Prayer

Take a moment to pray together, asking God for guidance in finding wonder, surrendering worry, and trusting in God’s majesty.
