Series Resources

sermon-based study guide

This guide is designed to guide a group discussion around the weekend sermon. You can also use this as an individual, but we highly recommend finding a friend and inviting them to discuss with you. Menlo Church has Life Groups meeting in-person and online using these guides. We’d love to help you find a group.
What you will find in this guide: A discussion guide for groups and individuals. If you are using this as an individual be sure to engage with each question in a journal or simply in your mind as you prayerfully consider what you heard in the sermon and seek to discover what God is inviting you to know and do.

ENGAGE

Read Acts 8:26-40 and discuss:

  • What details in this passage highlight Philip's obedience?
  • How does the Ethiopian eunuch demonstrate his desire to understand the scripture?
  • Why do you think the eunuch is so quick to decide to be baptized?
  • Take a moment for quiet reflection. Consider the characters of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch. What actions did they take that demonstrate faith and obedience?

APPLY

  • The sermon highlighted the importance of baptism as a public declaration of faith. If you haven't been baptized and are considering it, what questions do you have?
  • How can we better integrate personal evangelism and faith sharing into their lives and outreach efforts?
  • How can we cultivate a spirit of immediate obedience in our lives?

PRAYER

Invite each person to spend a few minutes in silent prayer. On a piece of paper, write down a specific situation where you might need the courage to step out in faith. Fold the paper and place it in a bowl in the center of the circle. Everyone draws one slip of paper, and then takes turns offering prayers for one another. Lift up specific situations where group members might need courage and discernment in following God's leading.
