sermon-based study guide

This guide is designed to guide a group discussion around the weekend sermon. You can also use this as an individual, but we highly recommend finding a friend and inviting them to discuss with you. Menlo Church has Life Groups meeting in-person and online using these guides. We’d love to help you find a group.
What you will find in this guide: A discussion guide for groups and individuals. If you are using this as an individual be sure to engage with each question in a journal or simply in your mind as you prayerfully consider what you heard in the sermon and seek to discover what God is inviting you to know and do.

The Cost of Connection | Thirst For Truth 03/02/2025

Series: The Cost of Connection
Title: Thirst for Truth
Date: March 2, 2025

CONNECT

What’s your go-to drink throughout the day—coffee, tea, soda, or something else? Have you ever gone a full day without drinking water?

Have you ever found yourself chasing something (a goal, a purchase, an experience) that you thought would satisfy, only to realize it didn’t?

ENGAGE

Read John 4:1-26

What do you notice about Jesus’ interaction with this woman? What stands out?

Jesus intentionally went through Samaria instead of avoiding it. What does this reveal about His heart for those considered outsiders?

Read John 4:27-42

The Samaritans first believe because of the woman’s testimony, but later they believe because of their own experience with Jesus. What does this tell us about the role of personal testimony in faith?

APPLY

Jesus met the woman in her daily routine and offered her something deeper. Where in your daily life do you sense God trying to get your attention?

The woman was carrying the weight of past hurts and shame. What burdens are you carrying that Jesus is inviting you to release?

PRAY

Thank God for meeting us in our daily lives and offering lasting satisfaction in Him.
Ask for courage to release the things that leave us spiritually thirsty.
Pray for opportunities to share our faith with others in a natural, meaningful way.

GOING DEEPER

Breath Prayer: A simple way to center your heart on God throughout the day. As you inhale, pray: Jesus, You are my living water.” As you exhale, pray: “Satisfy my soul.” Repeat this throughout your day, especially in moments of stress or distraction, allowing it to draw you into God’s presence.

Encourage Someone: Reach out to someone who might be carrying shame, loneliness, or discouragement. Offer a word of kindness, just as Jesus did with the Samaritan woman.

LENT Devotional: Lent is a 40-day season of reflection, repentance, and renewal, preparing our hearts for Easter. It’s a time to draw closer to God by letting go of distractions and embracing prayer, fasting, and Scripture. This devotional series invites you into a journey of surrender, love, and renewal—guiding you through reflective readings, videos, and practices to deepen your faith and align with God’s purpose.
