Series Resources

sermon-based study guide

This guide is designed to guide a group discussion around the weekend sermon. You can also use this as an individual, but we highly recommend finding a friend and inviting them to discuss with you. Menlo Church has Life Groups meeting in-person and online using these guides. We’d love to help you find a group.
What you will find in this guide: A discussion guide for groups and individuals. If you are using this as an individual be sure to engage with each question in a journal or simply in your mind as you prayerfully consider what you heard in the sermon and seek to discover what God is inviting you to know and do.

The Story of Jesus

STORY TELLERS | September 1, 2024

CONNECT

Share one of your favorite stories where you got insight into the same story but from the perspective of different characters. Explain what you learned from seeing the same story through different eyes.

ENGAGE

Read John 1:14 as a group and discuss:

  • What is one word that sums up the story you want to tell yourself about God this week, and how can you live out that narrative?
  • Have you ever had to confront or change a negative story you told yourself? What was that process like?
  • How do the stories you tell yourself about your past experiences shape your relationships and interactions today?
  • What is the story you are currently telling yourself about God, and how does it affect your faith and actions?
  • How does the knowledge that God is “interruptible” and always has time for you change the way you approach Him in prayer?

APPLY

  • What specific actions can you take this week to deepen your understanding of God’s story in your life, particularly through the lens of Scripture and your daily experiences?
  • How can you intentionally change a negative story you’ve been telling yourself this week to align more with the truth of who God says you are? What practical steps will you take to reinforce this new narrative?

PRAYER

Pray together, asking God to help us recognize that He is the author of our lives and that our stories are part of His greater story of putting broken things right. Ask God to show you His deep love and care for you in the story that is still being written.
